Murphy Anderson Successfully Obtains Injunctions Against Political Takeover of Ohio State Teachers Retirement System

October 15, 2025

Representing six individual teachers and retirees, Murphy Anderson sued the State of Ohio in the Common Pleas Court for Franklin County, Ohio, in September to block a new state law that would have handed control of the State Teachers Retirement System over to political appointees and overturned the system’s longtime democratic governance. The Firm argued that the state law changing the governance of STRS violated three provisions of the Ohio Constitution and should be set aside.

Murphy Anderson successfully convinced the Common Pleas Court to enter a TRO against the new law (which was upheld on appeal) and today the same court issued a preliminary injunction to block the new law from going into effect. A copy of the decision is here. Accordingly, control over STRS remains with its democratically elected board.

Murphy Anderson lawyers Arlus Stephens, Joni Jacobs, and Jennifer Vail represent the teachers in the litigation, along with counsel from Marshall Forman & Schlein in Columbus.
