Mark Hanna testifies in Virginia Senate Committee in favor of Virginia Human Rights Act Fix

January 19, 2022

Murphy Anderson attorney Mark Hanna testified in favor of SB494 in the Virginia Senate General Laws Committee. The bill provides clarity for Virginia employees and employers under the employment law protections of the Virginia Human Rights Act.  Richmond Senator Jennifer McClellan is the patron of the bill.

SB494 simplifies the historic Virginia Values Act passed by the legislature in 2020 by harmonizing the employer threshold to 5 employees or more for all claims, and by inserting a two-year statute of limitations for employment claims of discrimination or harassment.  The current civil rights law has various confusing employer thresholds depending on the claim and does not have a clear statute of limitations.

On January 27 the Virginia Senate passed SB494.
